“My biggest gripes with the Alcatel Venture are its inconsistencies. It nails some of the most important features, whist failing badly at other table-stakes tasks. While I understand that the Venture is targeting cost-conscious customers, the display and keyboard -- the two most vital elements for interacting with the device -- are painfully bad. Conversely, the Venture is one of the better voice phones I've tested in recent memory, and I had no trouble surfing the web with the device. The system software is easy to use, and the Virgin iD packs provide a little bit of flexibility when it comes to managing themes and customization, but performance lags and the device is a bit buggy.”

In Depth

For most consumers, the most desirable features in a smartphone are a large display and a full QWERTY keyboard. The Alcatel Venture unfortunately misses the mark on both of these necessities as well as some other important features, putting it in tough against other Android smartphone options.

The Venture’s key features include a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen display, a 2MP camera, 512MB of RAM, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, Wi-Fi, a 1,300 mAH battery, and a full QWERTY keyboard. Right off the bat, you’ll notice one of its biggest shortcomings: low native resolution for its larger-than-usual display. Also, it runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread by default. The software is good, but performance is a bit laggy with the 600MHz processor onboard.

Where the Venture excels is voice calls. According to some reviewers, it’s one of the best handsets out on the market right now in terms of voice call quality.

Overall, the Venture appears to be a mixed bag. It’s not the fastest or the smartest. It gets the basic elements right, but the resulting combination of its parts doesn’t perform all that well.

Need to Know: Alcatel Venture
