“The question on everyone's mind must be how the Bold 9790 will coexist with the Bold 9900. And they're not asking nicely either. People are fuming in the comments and most of them seem to see no point in having two so very similar handsets released fairly soon after one another. We don’t pretend to know how RIM think, but we guess we can see some of their reasoning. Let's look at the facts. It's six months sharp between the release of both phones. Even more, if you acknowledge that the Bold 9790 is only now starting to be available on a broader scale. So, we've come to that after all. Price is the biggest thing the Bold 9790 has in its favor. It's the affordable option in the premium line. One that's not supposed to compete with the flagship but help RIM widen their demographic and get a foothold in emerging markets. The 9790 is a natural upgrade from the Bold 9780 but you can throw in a few Curves there as well for flavor. It should be a good option too for loyal RIM users who fancy a transition to touchscreen but think the Torch line is taking it too far.The Bold 9790 is a classic BlackBerry package. Not the kind of classic you need to be old enough to appreciate. A loyal Blackberry user perhaps…”

“You might conclude that we don't like the 9790. But that's not it at all. In fact we are just more disappointed at the mistakes BlackBerry has made with it. Yet again we have a phone with a lovely screen, great battery life, and a superb keyboard. All in a package and small enough to fit easily in our pocket. But this is rendered pointless by a few odd design decisions and an operating system that really needs an update. The classic BlackBerry form factor just doesn't work anymore in the world of big screen smartphones. We need a way for the QWERTY expertise to be incorporated into something with a display larger than a matchbox. That aside, if you are part of the social hardcore who likes to be constantly emailing and chatting with friends. This is the best value communicator you could possibly pick up. It grants you access to RIM's speedy world of push email and BBM, whilst not being so budget that it will fall apart in your rucksack.BlackBerry is going to need to do something as significant as Nokia did with the Lumia 800 if it wants to see its decline reversed.”

“While very elegant, the $299 BlackBerry Bold 9900 suffers from the same affliction as its Verizon cousin, the $249 Bold 9930. Both represent the ultimate in messaging devices, but the tiny displays and lackluster app selection leave us wanting more. For $100 less, the myTouch 4G Slide boasts a great keyboard, a superb 8-MP camera, true 4G data, and a much bigger 3.7-inch display. Of course, business users who don't want to kick the BlackBerry habit will find lots to like here, such as beefed-up performance, a sexy design, and the Bugatti of mobile keyboards. So hopefully their IT departments can foot the bill.”

“Overall, there is a lot to like about the BlackBerry Bold 9790. It is beautifully designed, has a really nice QWERTY keyboard, and delivers outstanding in-call audio quality. In fact, if you are a BlackBerry enthusiast, you probably needn't look at a higher end model as this one would do the same job just fine. But if you do not insist on owning a BlackBerry, we think that it would be much wiser to spend your money on something different. Currently, a Bold 9790 can be purchased for about $550 off-contract, meaning that there are plenty of alternatives to consider. If you insist on having a physical keyboard, the Motorola PRO+ offers one, yet comes with a bigger, 3.1-inch display and is much more affordable. With its 3.7-inch screen, the Sony Ericsson Xperia pro is also worth considering, as long as you do not mind the slide-out QWERTY form factor. And if you need something that would be really easy on your budget, the Samsung Galaxy M Pro should do the trick. If you can live without a physical keyboard, check out the Samsung Galaxy W, which costs considerably less, yet comes with a bigger, 3.7-inch display. If you are willing to spend a little more cash, the 16-gig Nokia Lumia 800 will definitely grab your attention with its sleek appearance and premium feel.”

In Depth

The BlackBerry Bold 9790 is the latest in a long line of phones from RIM. The styling is typical of BlackBerry with a sleek profile and elegant curves. It features a backlit QWERTY keyboard, which features all the keys you need, but they are a bit small. People with large hands might accidentally hit multiple keys, which can make writing e-mails and texting a bit of a pain. The BlackBerry Bold 9790 is built very well and constructed with brushed stainless steel, giving the phone excellent drop protection.

The phone features a 1.2GHz processor and 768MB of RAM. While these numbers lag behind the competition a bit, the Bold 9790 still feels plenty snappy in everyday use thanks to efficient software. 8GB of internal storage is included, which can be limiting to some users. Fortunately, there is a microSD slot tucked under the battery which can accept up to a 32GB card. Call quality is very good as well. Voices come across clear and dropped calls simply do not happen. The Bold 9790 does lack 4G LTE hardware though, making it unable to take advantage of that network and its lightning fast download speeds.

The camera on the BlackBerry Bold 9790 is far behind the competition. It only uses a five megapixel sensor and most photos appear washed out and not very sharp. Video is not much better with muted colors and a lot of distortion if you move the phone a bit when recording. The BlackBerry OS is also starting to show its age. While it is still easy enough to use, it just feels outdated compared to iOS and Android. If you are coming from either of those operating systems, prepare for a disappointment.
