“Set alongside the BlackBerry Bold, we'd take the BlackBerry Q10 any time. It's a step forward for BlackBerry's Qwerty device, it offers the reassurance of a physical keyboard that's great to use, with tried and tested shortcuts, and improvements to many areas of the OS. It's more up to date, it's a better performer all round and still delivers the elements we love about BlackBerry. The browser is better, the UI is more sophisticated and the experience is much more comparable with rival smartphones than the last generation of BlackBerry smartphones.”

“BlackBerry's Q10 is filled with many creative features but its ultimate success will come down to one basic question: Do you want a qwerty device? I don't think the era of the qwerty is over, since I have met users who prefer a physical keyboard. But they are in the definite minority. What Q10 users will get with the new smartphone is a distinctive-looking device with a vivid display, an easy-to-use physical keyboard and touchscreen interface and an inventive approach to user security and management. In the most optimistic scenario, BlackBerry's Q10 sales will out-do its Z10 sales, which BlackBerry claims have gone well, critics notwithstanding.”

“Even though it doesn’t have a giant display, the BlackBerry Q10 may prove more interesting to mainstream users than the Z10. After all, there are a million touchscreen smartphones in the world. There aren’t many phones with good physical keyboards (and the competition mainly consists of other BlackBerry devices). And the main reason why most want that good keyboard is because they spend most of their time messaging, if nothing else, BlackBerry 10 is made for that type of person and the Q10 is made to deliver the best experience around messaging. For people who prioritize this above everything else, including good apps, the Q10 is a good buy. Just be aware that in order to get the most out of it, you’ll need to invest some time in learning the tricks and shortcuts.”

“Once upon a time, BlackBerrys were the envy of the mobile-phone world, and consumers flocked to Bolds and Curves to BBM and email on the go. But while times have changed, BlackBerry has done well by QWERTY fans by bringing a handset to market with a killer keyboard and modern operating system. The Q10's small display will almost certainly turn off shoppers accustomed to viewing websites and videos on larger screens. However, for those who have been looking for a keyboard-equipped smartphone to hammer out messages, notes and more, the BlackBerry Q10 is a good choice.”

In Depth

The Q10 is the first model running the new Blackberry 10 operating system to feature a full QWERTY keyboard. Built for loyal fans of the Blackberry typing experience, it mixes a comfortable hardware keyboard with refined gesture controls and an app based ecosystem.

As Jonathan Bray of PcPro points out, “The Q10 leaves no key hardware feature out, with Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi and 4G all present and correct.” In fact, it managed to bridge the past with the present quite nicely for something designed like an old Blackberry.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t sit well with those used to the full touch interface. Half of the device is keyboard, while the other half is a small square display, making this phone a bad bet for viewing multimedia content. However, for a keyboard addict, Tim Stevens from Engadget agrees that the Q10 is “unquestionably the best phone with a keyboard on the market.”

The Good: Awesome physical keyboard, ability to run apps.

The Bad: Small screen with bad aspect ratio, limited app selection compared to Android & Apple.
