OnePlus Nord 5

Design

The design takes cues from more expensive brands, with its flat sides reminiscent of recent Apple devices and a camera bump similar to Samsung models. The OnePlus Nord 5 has a polished finish and comfortable ergonomics, making it pleasant to hold despite its larger size.

The device comes in three colors: Phantom Grey, Dry Ice, and Marble Sands. These choices allow some personalization, though none match the unique metallic look of its predecessor. “Stuff” magazine commented, “The glass/polycarbonate build feels like a step back.”

The new Plus key replaces the alert slider, allowing multiple customization options, but misses the convenient tactile feel. With an IP65 rating, the phone offers basic protection against dust and splashes, ensuring durability in everyday use.

Display(s)

The phone’s 6.83-inch display is impressive, offering fluid scrolling thanks to its high 144Hz refresh rate. This makes activities like gaming and browsing the web feel smooth and responsive.

Colors are vivid and accurate, enhancing the overall viewing experience whether you’re watching videos or viewing photos. According to Tom’s Guide, “The images on the display look bright and colorful and there’s no noticeable delay between input and execution when scrolling.”

With brightness peaking at 1,800 nits, you can comfortably use the phone outdoors, even under sunlight. This ensures clear visibility wherever you are.

Performance

Equipped with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, the OnePlus Nord 5 handles gaming and multitasking effortlessly. You’ll experience fast app loads and smooth animations, even with demanding games like Call of Duty Mobile benefiting from the immersive 144Hz refresh rate. Experts highlight its “outstanding gaming performance,” ensuring you enjoy seamless play.

Despite being mid-range, the Nord 5 offers speed and responsiveness that can rival pricier models, making everyday use feel seamless. Its vapor chamber cooling system efficiently manages heat, enhancing your device’s performance longevity.

While it competes well against many, including the Pixel 9a, it does falter slightly behind newer models like the iPhone 16e. Yet, for cost-conscious users seeking high performance without flagship prices, the Nord 5 is a formidable choice.

Software & Storage

OxygenOS remains a streamlined and flexible interface that offers an intuitive experience. You’ll find it easy to customize your phone with features like the Plus Key, which lets you access preferred apps or tasks quickly.

The OnePlus Nord 5 includes Google’s AI tools, giving you access to helpful assistants like ‘Hey Google’. As experts noted, “Google Gemini remains one of the best AIs you can have on phones.” While AI offers advanced features, some users may find them lacking in simplicity.

In terms of future-proofing, the phone promises four years of OS updates and six years of security patches. This longevity ensures your device stays refreshingly up-to-date over time.

Cameras

The OnePlus Nord 5 features a well-rounded camera package with a 50MP main sensor offering natural colors and solid low-light performance. It’s paired with an 8MP ultrawide camera which, while not the best for fine details, captures broader scenes effectively.

Notably, reviewers highlight the standout 50MP front-facing camera, lauded for its autofocus that consistently produces sharp and stunning selfies, deserving the claim of the best in its class for this price range.

Though the ultrawide falls short on rich detail, the phone’s main and selfie cameras make up for it, providing a worthwhile experience for everyday photography.

Battery

For day-to-day endurance, you’ll find the phone’s 5,200mAh battery up to the task, even though it’s a step back from the previous model’s larger capacity. Experts found that it “still manages to last the day with little issue” despite the size reduction.

Fast charging allows you to reach an 80% charge in about 30 minutes with the 80W option available, offering convenience for those quick power-ups. Yet, some may feel the absence of wireless charging, which limits charging flexibility.

As long as you’re equipped with a compatible charger, you’ll avoid battery anxiety and enjoy extended phone use throughout your daily routine.

Audio

The stereo speakers on this phone ensure you hear every word clearly during calls, making communication a breeze even in busy environments. Reviewers highlight that vocals come through clearly, which is great for both personal and professional calls.

For entertainment, the phone’s speakers provide enough volume to enjoy music, podcasts, or a YouTube video comfortably. “Podcasts and YouTube clips sound just fine,” according to experts, though bass levels might not satisfy those seeking a deep audio experience.

Overall, it may not compete with high-end models with enhanced bass and loudness, but for the average user, it lifts day-to-day audio interactions and entertainment to a satisfying level.

The Bottom Line

This phone offers impressive performance and vivid display, making it great for those who want power without the flagship price tag. Reviewers noted its excellent battery life and standout selfie camera, with one stating that it “delivers exceptional performance.” The lack of a metal chassis and certain features like wireless charging might feel like a step backward for some. Still, with a refined, user-centric experience, it stands strong among its peers.
