“It isn't for everyone, but if you're looking to spend less time on your smartphone, the super-small Unihertz Jelly Star might be just the right handset for you.”

“Most people have never seen, let alone used, a phone like the 3-inch Unihertz Jelly Star. While it's hardly any bigger than a fun-size candy bar, it can do nearly everything any other Android phone can, although the screen size and lower-midrange hardware will be deal-breakers for many people.”

“The Unihertz Jelly Star defies expectations with its compact size and surprising performance. Despite its diminutive stature, this Android smartphone delivers a powerful and capable user experience with a fun LED light system. From its sleek design to its impressive display, the Jelly Star offers a unique proposition in the smartphone market.”

“Honestly, I've kind of fallen in love with the Unihertz Jelly Star. It literally fits into the palm of my hand! All the other phones out there have huge screens that stick out too far and are very cumbersome to use while holding the device with one hand. Not only is it small and very pocket friendly, but it has some nice features that aren't even available on $1000-$2000+ devices (headset jack, MicroSD card slot). The price is very affordable too. You might want to strongly consider the Jelly Star as a phone to switch to during times that you want to literally minimize your smartphone usage and spend more time in the real world.”

In Depth

Design

The Jelly Star’s design makes a statement with its compact, candy-bar-sized form. This tiny phone fits into pockets with ease and feels comfortable in the hand, making it perfect for one-handed use.

The transparent body reveals the phone’s internals, adding a unique visual element. It’s eye-catching and reminiscent of early tech designs which many find nostalgic.

Flat on most surfaces, its LED lights can flash with notifications, providing visual alerts when you’re on the go. TechRadar observed that “people constantly do double-takes and ask what the heck I’m looking at and typing on.” This showcases how the Jelly Star’s design can start conversations and draw interest with its unusual form.

Display(s)

The Jelly Star boasts a 3-inch screen that, while small, delivers relatively sharp images thanks to its compact nature. Reviewers found this advantageous for reducing time on social media.

On the downside, the “screen is difficult to see in direct sunlight,” as observed by many users. Navigating apps designed for larger displays can pose a challenge, especially for those with larger hands.

While ideal for brief interactions, prolonged usage for videos or reading may not provide the best experience.

Performance

The Unihertz Jelly Star impresses with its compactness and manages basic smartphone functionalities effectively. Its MediaTek Helio G99 processor, paired with 8GB of RAM, delivers reliable performance for everyday activities like browsing and messaging.

Despite its small size, the phone handles multitasking well, revealing an unexpected versatility for a device of this dimension.

Reviewers praise its functionality balance, stating, “It’s not designed for intensive gaming, but for practical phone use, it’s somewhere approaching fantastic”.

Software & Storage

The Jelly Star offers an Android 13 interface with minimal bloatware. Many users appreciate this uncluttered approach.

Reviewers point out the “bland Android UI doesn’t do its usability or appearance many favors,” highlighting the potential need for third-party launchers. Future updates beyond security patches may not happen. Critics emphasize the need for continued security patches.

This software setup suits those seeking focus on essential phone functions without extra distractions.

Cameras

The phone features a 48MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera, suitable for basic photography needs. Reviewers mentioned that while outdoor daytime shots are decent, low-light and night photography produce noisy, washed-out images.

“The same is true for macro shots”, reviewers from PCMag indicated when discussing the Jelly Star’s camera drawbacks in less favorable lighting.

Special features like RAW output provide editing options, yet may be a lesser priority for typical use.

Battery

The battery life of the device caters to those looking for a balanced mobile experience. With light to moderate use, you’ll find your phone easily lasts a full day, offering a stress-free day without constantly needing a charge. This is ideal for users who engage primarily in calls, texts, and occasional browsing throughout their day.

Charging isn’t a daunting task, thanks to its 10W wired charging capability. You’ll have the convenience of powering up in just over an hour, keeping you on schedule even during busy days. This rapid charge level provides quick recovery, perfect for those unexpected moments when your battery is running low. Experts agree that while the battery is “unimpressive” at times, it holds up well under reasonable usage expectations.

In essence, you’ll have enough power to support your daily smartphone needs without the anxiety of frequent recharges common among many users.

Audio

When it comes to call clarity, the Unihertz Jelly Star does surprisingly well. Reviewers noted that calls sound good on both ends despite the phone’s small size, making it reliable for basic phone conversations.

For entertainment, the speaker quality doesn’t match higher-end devices. Music or video sounds can get lost, especially at louder volumes. “Vocals in music sounded pretty good…but instruments get a bit lost,” according to a reviewer from the Gadgeteer.

If you enjoy watching movies or playing games, you might prefer using headphones or an external speaker to enhance the experience.

The Bottom Line

This device stands out due to its extremely small size, making it highly portable and ideal if you want to curb your smartphone usage. Its vibrant design and rear LED lights catch the eye, but some may find it challenging to use due to its slippery design and lack of accessories. Furthermore, its minimal software support and low-light camera performance could concern potential buyers. As “PCMag” mentioned, “If you’re looking to spend less time on your smartphone, the super-small design might be just the right handset for you.”
