Unlimited Data Plans

Every plan here has no hard data cap on your device, but "unlimited" means different things depending on which plan you pick. This collection is every unlimited data plan we track, ranked by Compass Score with honest all-in pricing, so you can see what you would actually pay and what you are actually getting before you commit.

About Unlimited Data Plans

Unlimited data plans do not all work the same way, and the differences matter in daily use. The most important distinction is between plans that reduce your speed after a threshold (throttling) and plans that only slow you down when the network is congested (deprioritization). A throttled plan will always be slow once you hit the cap, regardless of how busy the network is. A deprioritized plan may perform well in quiet areas and feel sluggish in busy ones. Neither is inherently better. The right answer depends on where you use your phone and how much data you consume.

Mobile hotspot data is the second thing to check, and it is frequently overlooked. Every unlimited plan tracks hotspot usage separately from on-device data, and the allotment varies widely across tiers. If you regularly use your phone to connect a laptop or tablet, the entry-level unlimited plan from any major carrier is unlikely to cover your needs. The plans in this collection show their hotspot allotment alongside the all-in price, so you can compare on the full picture rather than the advertised number alone.

The all-in price we show on every plan card here includes the advertised rate plus recovery fees and an estimated tax where the carrier adds it on top. Unlimited plans have some of the widest gaps between the advertised monthly rate and what you would actually pay, because recovery fees vary significantly by carrier and are rarely included in the headline number. Two plans with the same advertised price can differ by several dollars a month once fees are accounted for. The ranking and the all-in figure on each card are designed to make that comparison honest rather than leaving it to the fine print.

Common questions

No, not in any legally consistent sense, and this is the most important thing to understand before buying. Every major carrier’s unlimited plan imposes at least one of three real restrictions: a hard speed reduction after a set data threshold, reduced priority during network congestion, or a separate and lower limit on mobile hotspot data. The word “unlimited” in plan names refers to the absence of an overage charge, not the absence of speed restrictions. Before buying any unlimited plan, look for three specific numbers in the fine print: the high-speed data threshold before speeds are reduced, the hotspot allotment, and whether the plan is subject to deprioritization during congestion.

These are two distinct mechanisms that both result in slower speeds but work very differently. Throttling is a hard, permanent speed reduction applied once you exceed a data threshold. It kicks in unconditionally, regardless of whether the network around you is busy. Deprioritization is conditional: your data is slowed only when a specific cell tower is congested, and if the network is not busy you may get full speeds even as a lower-priority user. In practice, deprioritization matters most in dense urban areas, stadiums, airports, and busy retail districts where network load is consistently high. It matters far less in suburban or rural areas with light traffic. A plan that throttles after a threshold will always slow you down once you hit it; a plan with deprioritization may never slow you down at all if you are in a low-traffic area.

Premium data is carrier terminology for data that is not subject to deprioritization. It is treated as high priority on the network at all times, including during congestion. Entry-level unlimited plans from all major carriers either exclude premium data entirely, or cap it at a threshold well below what a heavy user would consume in a month. Mid-tier and premium plans typically include a larger premium data allotment or remove the cap entirely. The most common mistake buyers make is choosing the lowest-tier unlimited plan and assuming they will receive the same network experience as someone on a premium tier. In a congested area, the difference is real and daily. Check the specific premium data allotment on any plan you are considering, not just the word “unlimited” in the plan name.

Hotspot data lets your phone share its cellular connection with a laptop, tablet, or other device. On virtually every unlimited plan, hotspot data is tracked separately from on-device data and capped at a much lower level. Once you exhaust the high-speed hotspot allotment, speeds typically drop to a point that makes web browsing unreliable. A common assumption buyers get wrong is that unlimited on-device data means unlimited hotspot. It does not, under any major carrier plan. Entry-level unlimited plans often include only a small hotspot allotment, while premium tiers include substantially more. If you regularly use your phone as a hotspot for a computer, the base tier of any major carrier plan is unlikely to meet your needs. Either aim for a mid-tier or above, or consider a dedicated hotspot device on a separate data plan.

MVNOs, or mobile virtual network operators, are carriers like Mint Mobile, Visible, and US Mobile that lease network access from the major carriers and resell it at lower prices. Because they run on the same physical towers, the coverage footprint is nearly identical to the host network. The meaningful tradeoff is prioritization: MVNO traffic is generally placed below postpaid customers of the host network during congestion, which means you may experience slower speeds in crowded areas even though you are technically on the same towers. For light-to-moderate users in areas without heavy network congestion, the performance difference between a well-chosen MVNO and the equivalent major carrier plan is often imperceptible in daily use, and the savings per line can be substantial. The gap widens in dense cities, at events, and in situations where networks are loaded. If you work or live in a congested urban area, prioritization tier matters more than it does for someone in a quieter location. Most MVNOs offer short-term trials, which is the most reliable way to test actual performance at your home, workplace, and commute before committing.

Multi-line plans offer genuine per-line savings, often dropping the effective per-line cost significantly compared to a single-line plan at the same tier. The savings are real, but the structure requires attention. All lines on a multi-line plan share one account and one responsible bill-payer. Removing a line mid-cycle typically eliminates the discount tier for remaining lines, which means the savings disappear if your family situation changes. A less obvious factor: budget MVNO carriers frequently offer per-line rates for families that beat even the discounted multi-line rates from major carriers, without account-level lock-in. If cost per line is the primary driver, compare MVNO family plans alongside the major carrier options before defaulting to a big-three family plan. The all-in prices we show on every plan card in this collection include the per-line cost at your stated number of lines, so you can compare on what you would actually pay rather than the per-line rate advertised for the maximum number of lines.

No. Having an unlimited plan does not guarantee 5G access. Whether you get 5G depends on two things: your plan tier and your physical location. Entry-level unlimited plans at some carriers restrict access to the fastest 5G bands to higher-paying tiers. And 5G coverage, particularly the fastest mid-band and high-band variants, is still far from universal. For most everyday use, including social media, streaming, and browsing, fast 4G LTE is functionally equivalent to 5G. The places where 5G provides a noticeable real-world benefit are dense urban environments, large public venues, and hotspot use. The most reliable way to assess whether 5G matters for your situation is to check the carrier’s coverage map for your specific home address, workplace, and regular commute rather than relying on nationwide coverage claims.

Promotional pricing, particularly from smaller carriers, is often introductory. Some carriers require prepaying several months upfront at the advertised rate, with renewal pricing higher. Major carriers have a documented pattern of raising prices on legacy plans with short notice, and price-lock guarantees sometimes exclude taxes, fees, and add-ons, meaning your bill can rise even under a stated guarantee. Before committing to any plan, look for the renewal terms and whether the advertised rate is a promotional price or the standard ongoing rate. The all-in prices we show are based on current published rates. For any plan you are seriously considering, verify the renewal terms directly with the carrier before signing up.

Two people standing in the same place with plans from the same carrier can experience different speeds based solely on their plan tier. The major carriers assign different quality-of-service levels to different plan tiers, which determines whose data gets through first when a tower is congested. Entry-level unlimited plans, including some plans from carriers that market heavily on price, often sit at the lowest priority level on the network. This means that in a busy area, even though you technically have unlimited data, you may experience the slowest speeds of any subscriber on that tower. Before choosing a plan based on price alone, look up the specific priority level it receives, not just the carrier name. Independent coverage and carrier review sites maintain updated information on priority tiers across carriers and their MVNO partners.
