“The HTC EVO View 4G is a very well built tablet with an amazing user interface. The 7” slap of glass and aluminum is more portable than the larger tablets on the market and the battery life was good enough to get us through two days of pretty heavy usage. Always innovating, HTC’s Scribe technology brings a unique and very useful element to the tablet market. When this is paired with Sprint’s 4G network it’s hard to deny the value and versatility of the EVO View 4G, however the tablet is at a disadvantage by not running Google’s tablet-optimized software like the rest of its competitors. This isn’t a deal-breaker for potential buyers, but until HTC can push out a Honeycomb update it will likely keep some away.”

“The HTC Evo View 4G is a beautiful little tablet that resembles HTC's celebrated line of Android smartphones. Unfortunately, the Evo View 4G is still a 7-inch Gingerbread tablet living in an increasingly 10-inch, Honeycomb world. HTC may eventually be able to carve out a niche for the 7-inch pen-enabled tablet, but Sprint's choice to go with two-year contracts and pricey data plans isn't going to help matters.”

“At first glance, the HTC EVO 4G has a lot going for it: unique pen input, blazing 4G speeds, and HTC's gorgeous Sense UI. The tablet's main problem is that, with the current software build and microphone, it largely fails as a note-taking device. The minute a student takes the EVO View 4G into a classroom and looks down to find out he's lost his work because he leaned on the bezel is the minute he'll want to return it. If you're interested in a 7-inch consumer tablet and note-taking is not a priority for you, the HTC EVO View 4G is definitely worth a look.”

“Here we are again. Even when you throw WiMAX into the mix, sizing up the HTC EVO View 4G presents almost the same mental balancing act as the 3G Flyer. When we think about what made our week with the View so enjoyable, we keep coming back to the well-tooled ergonomics, bright display, and long battery life -- all things that warmed us to the Flyer. For a lot of people, Sprint's consistently fast (but hardly ubiquitous) 4G network will be a boon, but perhaps not a compelling enough feature to seal their buying decision. Moreover, the addition of WiMAX isn't enough to soften our criticisms of the Flyer -- even if you prefer the comfort of Gingerbread, this thing still needs more apps that are optimized to take advantage of that bright 7-inch display. With a chunky shape and no ETA for Honeycomb, the View 4G isn't the sexiest or most cutting-edge slate of the bunch. But it's sensible, reassuring. And if Sprint is correct that the people considering this might well be satisfied EVO customers, there could be something to be said for sticking with what you know.”

In Depth

The HTC Evo View 4G is a sneaky device which manages to live its life as a tablet, while maintaining the appearance of a smartphone. This unit’s compact screen is a mere 7 inches. This makes it perfect for tucking into a large pocket or a purse. For tablet users who are constantly on the go, the tiny View 4G may represent a perfect match.

The “4G” in the Evo View’s name means that the tablet can connect to Sprint’s 4G data network. This is handy for frequent travelers who need fast access to web content wherever they may roam. Of course, connecting directly to W-Fi is also an option, as this tablet is 802.11b/g/n compliant.

The Evo View has 1GB of RAM to help it zip around its Android 2.3 operating system. Although it is expected that this unit would run on Google’s Honeycomb operating system, the Evo View keeps up its spy tactics. That’s right, this unit truly is a smartphone in disguise! Saving music, videos, important documents and pictures is a stress-free endeavor with 32GB of internal memory. For a limited time, Sprint is bundling this tablet with a unit specific stylus. Using the stylus for navigation through the tablet’s interface is not possible, but it does allow the user to write notes, sign documents and draw doodles during boring meetings.

For fun activities outside of the life of meetings and business jargon, the Evo View features two cameras. First, there is the front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera which is perfect for posting Wednesday morning pictures to Tumblr and Twitter. Second, there is a 5 megapixel camera on the back of the unit for pictures of friends, cats or both. Overall, the Evo View 4G is a solid portable tablet with relatively beefy specs that might make some laptops feel embarrassed.
