“The Galaxy Note 8.0 is a package that makes sense but it seems imperative that Samsung make it genuinely affordable. And this one hasn't only got the competition to worry about but Samsung's very own phablets too.”

“There are a lot of negative points up there, but keep in mind, pointing them out is my job. I really enjoyed using the Galaxy Note 8.0, with the form factor, performance, and a few of Samsung's software enhancements populating the plus column. The only thing about the tablet that I really don't appreciate is the smartphone-style buttons, and I imagine those would be easy enough to get used to after a few extended sessions. The 8-9 tablet size is ideal in my opinion, and if you agree, you'll find a lot to love here.”

“The Galaxy Note 8.0 is one of Samsung's better tablets but it's hampered by its extravagant price tag. Unless you really want the S Pen stylus there are better and cheaper 8in-screen tablet alternatives on the market.”

“The 16GB, Wi-Fi only version of the Galaxy Note 8 is available in the United States for $399, a price that isn’t exactly cheap, but not unreasonably high either. It’s clear that Samsung made some compromises in the specs and features department to be able to offer the Note 8 at that price point, but does the end result justify the financial effort? The answer boils down to one point – do you care about the S Pen, and if so, how much are you willing to pay to have it? The stylus is the biggest selling factor of a device that is in most regards average. The camera is lackluster, the battery life is only decent, and the software is standard fare if you don’t care about the S Pen features. On the plus side, the Galaxy Note 8 offers great performance and the display is relatively good, making it a good option for media consumption and gaming.”

In Depth

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is not a tablet. It’s a phone-tablet hybrid, and according to Kob Monney of What Hi-Fi, it’s one that “showed promise when it was released.” Since that time, however, it has already been supplanted by newer rivals, which either use more compact designs or simply offer more in terms of performance.

Some of the Note 8.0’s main features include a 1.6GHz quad-core CPU, a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, up to 32GB of internal storage, microSD card support, and a 4,600mAh battery.

The headline feature is its screen: a 8-inch LCD TFT panel that has a native resolution of 1280×800 pixels, rated by Know Your Mobile’s Dean Quinn as “impressive.” The operating system comes in the form of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

Overall, the Note 8.0 really is quite the performer. And it should be right on the money for stylus enthusiasts, because as Fone Arena’s Bharadwaj mentions, it offers “the comfort of a huge screen coupled with basic mobile functions.” Unfortunately, “there’s one main problem with the Galaxy Note 8.0,” says The Inquirer’s Carly Page. “And that’s its high price tag.”

In the end, it looks like Samsung might not have done enough to make this product truly stand out from a crowded marketplace of phablet competitors. When you consider how easy it is to find alternatives that are cheaper yet just as useful, you might quickly run out of reasons to justify this one.
