“The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is really just a tweak of the existing 10.1-inch Tab, but that tweak makes it a bit more appealing. It's a little more portable and a little less expensive, without losing a pixel of screen resolution, a hertz of processor speed, or a byte of storage. That said, we have the same problem with this tablet that we do with most high-end Android tablets this size: It's going up directly against the iPad, which has far more apps and a stronger ecosystem. Seven-inch Android 3.2 tablets at least have the benefits of being more portable and having phone apps look decent in zoomed mode. But it's hard to argue why the masses, when presented with this device and an iPad, should pick the Tab 8.9. If you're not an Apple fan, though, and you want the thinnest Android tablet you can get, the Tab 8.9 is a solid choice.”

“the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is a fantastic Android-based tablet and quite possibly your best alternative to the iPad 2. By manufacturing a tablet at every size, Samsung has stumbled on a great medium between the hefty 10.1-inch tablets and the diminutive 7-inch tablets. We’ve had the Xoom, PlayBook, and other tablets sitting around our office all year now, but the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is the first device we’ve used on a daily basis. It’s just more comfortable to hold and operate than anything else outside of the iPad.”

“It's pretty remarkable that Samsung was able to squeeze the same parts from its 10-inch tablet into the Galaxy Tab 8.9. It performs just as well, and the screen and audio are both impressive. However, at $469, you'll need to spend almost as much to get your hands on this smaller slate than you would to buy the Tab 10.1. Consumers looking for a tablet they can hold in one hand would do better with the cheaper $329 Acer Iconia A100--or waiting for the upcoming Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. But if you want the higher-resolution screen of the Tab 10.1 in a more portable package, the Tab 8.9 is worth a look.”

“Standing out like a sore thumb, it’s simply plagued by too many instances of unresponsiveness that tarnish its pristine aura. From playing high definition videos to navigating around its homescreen, we’re just turned off a little bit by its sluggishness. However, its biggest detractor has to be its $469 pricing, which doesn’t seem to be justifiable based on its offerings and performance. Obviously, it’s pricey when it’s only separated by only $30 from its bigger brother. On the other hand, if it were priced somewhere around the lower $400 mark or less, it could potentially gain some credibility, but as of right now, it’s very hard to accept altogether when you look at the big picture.”

In Depth

After tinkering with the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, one thing is clear: Samsung has really done its homework on the tablet market. The Tab 8.9 offers the same functionality and performance of its big brother, the Tab 10.1, but with a smaller display size (8.9 inches vs. 10.1 inches, of course) and lighter weight. Despite its smaller screen, the Tab 8.9 still has the same crisp, colorful 170 ppi display that has made the Tab 10.1 so popular. Both are a super slim 8.6 mm thick, which makes the Tab 8.9 both lighter and thinner than its closest non-Samsung competitor, the iPad 2.

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is available with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage; it also sports built-in WiFi and 3G, with added ability to support up to 4G. Android fans, rejoice: the Galaxy Tab 8.9 runs the Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS, which is beloved for its speed and responsiveness. The tablet also comes pre-loaded with access to the ever-growing Android Market and Amazon App Store, which gives users a choice of over 250,000 news, entertainment, business, reference and gaming apps.

Music lovers and snap-happy photographers will swoon over the Micro-SD card slot, which is a rare feature in the tablet market and allows for up to 32GB of extra storage of MP3s, pictures and video. Speaking of pictures, the Tab 8.9 sports both a front and rear camera (2 megapixels and 3 megapixels, respectively). Better yet, the rear-camera has a built-in flash and allows users to record video in high-definition. Samsung’s Galaxy tablet also offers a great deal of flexibility. Unlike the iPad 2, it includes 2 USB ports to allow for a customizable, adaptable tablet experience.

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is a quick, versatile and portable tablet that effectively makes the most of its smaller display. It is one of the lightest and thinnest tablets available on the market and is one of the few tablets that can easily go head-to-head with the iPad.
