“The Alcatel Tribe is definitely a step in the right direction for Wind Mobile, in order to expand on their Android offerings and increase their attractiveness as a new service provider. This device is geared towards lower end users, looking for an easy to use smartphone, with all the basic features currently being offered (Android OS, touch screen, sleek/compact design, WiFi capability, cost effective etc.). The Alcatel Tribe OT-981 is currently available with Wind Mobile in Canada, under the following pricing structure:”

I made the jump to smart phones with the Tribe. Nice phone. Love the slide out keyboard! Only have two problems with this phone (well, three, but two of them are dependent upon each other): 1. It only runs Android 2.1 (so App2SD functionality is not supported) and it has very limited disk space. ...
The phone is poor quality over all, the display part that slides upward is not attached properly/stable and shakes with a small nudge (other people i talked to had the same problem). The Qwerty keyboard is too cramped, although the rubber buttons give it good texture. However the biggest problems...
Love this phone ive had it for 4days just made the step to smartphone. Its simple to use with lots of features and and it looks great. Very fast browsing and no real delay going from different programs in the phone. def recommend this phone, plus it looks pretty awesome.
In Depth
The Alcatel OT-981A, otherwise known as the Alcatel Tribe, may look like your typical touchscreen phone, but don’t be fooled, this is a QWERTY phone as well. Tucked underneath its 2.8-inch 240×320 resolution touchscreen display is a slide-out 4-row QWERTY keypad that’s ideal for text input if the on-screen keypad isn’t to your liking, giving you the best of both worlds. The five shortcut buttons below its display, meanwhile, provide quick access to often used functions such as Phone, Options, Home, Back, and End/Power.
The Tribe runs on Android 2.1 and sports a 2-megapixel camera with video recording capabilities, WiFi, Bluetooth, and 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity. A 2GB microSD card has also been thrown in to the standard package to complement its meager 512MB on-board memory.
With its modest feature-set, this is not a phone well-suited to power users, but it may very well be a good option for those who’ve got the Android itch but don’t want to dole out a small fortune on a new handset.
