Critic consensus
“As usual, the RIM BlackBerry Curve 3G scored high marks on the performance section. Callers were amazed at how good we sounded, calling it “high def kinda stuff.” They said we were extremely clear and that they could hear everything, and rated us 9/10. Things were good but didn’t have the wow factor on our end. We could hear them just fine and they sounded perfectly natural. Battery life remains the same at 4.5 hours of talk time. It’s almost not fair to review the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 right now. The main reason it was brought to market was because it is BlackBerry OS 6 compatible, otherwise it’s just a slightly better Curve 8530. Even in its current state it is better than the 8530 though, so at least there are some improvements like better feel, a faster processor, more memory and an improved trackpad. As it stands the Curve 3G 9330 is a great entry-level BlackBerry that only stands to get better once it receives an OS upgrade.”
“The RIM BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 comes with BlackBerry OS 5 but RIM and Verizon have promised that it will be upgradable to BlackBerry OS 6. The new OS promises quite a number of improvements like a revamped home screen, universal search, easier access to messaging, a new Webkit browser, and more. The Curve 3G 9330 has the usual phone features like voice dialing, conference calling, speed dialing, a speakerphone, vibrate mode, and of course text and multimedia messaging. Instant messaging options include BlackBerry Messenger, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, and Windows Live. Continuing the RIM legacy of strong e-mail features, the Curve 3G 9330 can sync with your company's BlackBerry Enterprise server in addition to other e-mail systems like Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, and your own POP3 or IMAP accounts. Other features include GPS/A-GPS with VZ Navigator support, EV-DO, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g), and stereo Bluetooth. You can use the GPS with other location-based apps and for geotagging photos. Mobile professionals will appreciate the calendar, a memo pad, document viewers for Microsoft Office, Corel WordPerfect, and PDF documents, and more. The phone has 256MB of flash memory, and there's also a microSD card slot that can accept up to 16GB cards.”
“The BlackBerry Curve 3G is a smartphone that lives up to the Curve line's good name. It is a smaller, lighter device that is easier to interact with than some of the larger, more powerful BlackBerrys. It excels at offering solid messaging, and the newer threaded SMS messaging software looks and works much better than the older version. RIM's email app is as powerful as ever, and even social networking is fairly robust, now that apps such as Facebook and Twitter take advantage of the BlackBerry platform's strengths. The media capabilities of the Curve 3G don't hold a candle to some of the other entry-level smartphones out there, which are packing more powerful 3.2 and 5 megapixel cameras. The camera software works, but has only a handful of new features. The same goes for the music player. Call quality was surprisingly inconsistent for a BlackBerry, but the Curve 3G always managed to find and use a signal without losing it. As with all BlackBerries, battery life was superb.”

In Depth
The new Blackberry Curve 9330 is the offspring of consumer suggestions and technological innovations deriving from the 8530, a popular Blackberry model. The new 9330 has an updated QWERTY keyboard and new shell, and is the perfect model for a consumer looking for a basic, low-expense smartphone. Its small size, about four inches tall and two inches wide, makes it uniquely portable and convenient, but the buttons are standard size for a Blackberry and feature a finger-friendly shape to keep use easy.
Although the display is a mere 320×240 pixels, it is adequate for most media needs. The camera is a 2 megapixel, and performs about as well as other comparable cell phone cameras. Despite the low visual specs, the excellent sound quality more than makes up for them. The 9330 Curve marketed itself as a more music-friendly phone, and the speakers and audio capability have certainly lived up to their calling. The phone features dedicated media buttons, including play, pause, and track skips. It also features a headphone jack, and its volume setting has a very wide range.
The 9330 has exceptional reception in even some of the most difficult-to-reach places, and does a wonderful job of delivering calls and messages promptly. Some users have noted that the phone has some oddities in its text messaging user interface, however. The data service for the newest child of the Curve line is above-average, easily keeping up with the most efficient competition.
Additionally, the battery life is very good, allowing the constant use of a bluetooth headset for almost two full days before needing a recharge. The user interface and menu are also very intuitive and easy to use.
Overall, the Blackberry Curve 9330 serves excellently in almost every capacity; its functionality purely as a phone is standard, and it has excellent reception and audio capabilities. It is lacking somewhat in screen quality, making it less ideal for music videos and some applications, but it has ideal capabilities for a basic, entry-level smartphone.
