“The main pressure on the Salsa will be coming from the Android midrange, where LG and Samsung are traditionally doing well. Windows Phone 7 too is in the picture with a more than solid approach to Facebook. But, the HTC Salsa has just the right reply to all of them. The little blue button does not entitle the HTC Salsa to call Facebook its own. But it gives a certain set of users something to connect with. It may seem a small thing - but the Salsa will only benefit from being focused and knowing its audience. Shame it doesn’t come cheaper. We're ready to like this one. Not so sure about share. At over 300 euro sim-free, it’s a tough one to recommend.”

“The HTC Status is a beautiful phone with good Facebook integration and an excellent keyboard, at the right price. But I can't recommend it with much enthusiasm because of how badly many apps (including Facebook!) work with the horizontal screen. Other Android phones don't have the hardware Facebook button, but they still integrate Facebook into their contact books and are more compatible with third-party apps.”

“When it comes right down to it, the HTC Status is a good choice and at the right price for those who like to stay connected to Facebook, but being an Android device, you have all the extra benefits that come along with it. The QWERTY keyboard is very useful, though it can feel a bit cramped with large hands, and the 2.6” display is about as small as you get on a smartphone without being too small, though it does work well – we just wish is were a bit larger.”

“If you find it hard to take the HTC ChaCha seriously with its funny name and interesting take on social networking, we'd like to take the opportunity to assure you that without the blue button, the ChaCha is still a solid performer. While it can be a little buggy, with better hardware across the board than its main competitors and Sense UI adding a decent amount of functionality, the HTC ChaCha delivers a good amount of fun, functionality and affordability.”

This phone has THE BEST Qwerty keyboard of any phone I've ever handled - and I still say so after 2 years of owning it and handling the newest Blackberry's. Great clicky feel, and the spacing and size of buttons is perfect - even for my man hands. I LOVE that it has the 4 arrow keys for navigatin...

In Depth

Just when you thought Facebook was everywhere, along comes HTC with their Status (aka ChaCha), a phone with a dedicated Facebook button implanted right on its keypad. The impossible to miss button lets you quickly update your status or share photos and videos you capture with the decent 5-megapixel shooter. Gimmick? Maybe. Handy for some? No doubt.

Facebook aside, the Status has a number of other “like”-able features, namely its construction. The phone feels solid, a slightly curved mix of plastic and metal. The QWERTY keyboard’s tactile buttons are raised, rubberized and likely usable by even the chubbiest of digits.

The screen is a relatively small 2.6 inches with 480×320 pixel resolution. While images are sharp, the landscape display can make it awkward to use apps normally designed for portrait mode. Lack of screen real estate is probably this phone’s greatest flaw.

Under the hood, you’ll find a middle-of-the-road 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM and a microSD card slot for extra storage. This will not win it any benchmarking awards, but the Status is no slouch and should run most apps smoothly on the installed Android operating system.

Overall, the Status looks to be a solid performer and a good budget choice if you’re a first-time smartphone buyer or a self-admitted Facebook junkie.

Need to know: HTC ChaCha

1. With the ChaCha’s dedicated Facebook button, you can upload your pics and vids faster than you can say “dude, you have to Facebook that”. (The Good)

2. Ahh…the smooth, satisfying sound of a ‘click’. That’s what you’ll get with this phone’s comfy QWERTY keyboard. (The Good)

3. Flash support is limited on the browser; a major bummer for cat video lovers! (The Bad)

4. To better accommodate a 2.6 inch landscape display; HTC has tweaked its ‘Sense’ user interface. The result can feel a bit like a Tokyo apartment – cramped. (The Bad)
