Critic consensus
“HTC don't like to call it a smartphone, let alone mention Android anywhere in the conversation. However women are clearly the HTC Rhyme's demographic whether HTC admits it or not. Rich in features and generously accessorized, on top of being quite attractive, it will easily connect with its target audience. It doesn't look like a particularly hard one to make either. Decisively similar to the Desire S, the only actual difference being the updated Sense UI, the Rhyme is still keen on offering robust user experience and good performance. It's the paintjobs and the set of accessories that help it stand out. Comes pricey for a single-core phone but all the extra stuff in the box certainly counts.”
“Beyond the hardware, liking the phone comes down to liking Sense. To us, a cool weather and clock widget aren't enough to save us from the annoyance of things like pre-loaded Verizon crapware and FriendStream, but as always, it's a matter of preference. If you love purple and you love Sense, then the Rhyme's for you. For the rest of us, we'll just stick with male phones.”
“Despite the transparent marketing ploy to target women, the HTC Rhyme is a enjoyable device. It's an attractive phone with an intuitive user interface and a sharp camera. The inclusion of the speaker dock, headphones, and Charm give the phone additional functionality, but $199 is a lot to pay for an Android phone that doesn't offer a dual-core processor or 4G data. It's not nearly as attractive or compact, but the $199 LG Revolution offers 4G LTE speeds and a larger 4.3-inch display. And the $199 iPhone 4S has a faster dual-core processor along with a more advanced camera. Nevertheless, fashion-conscious consumers will find more than one reason to pick up the Rhyme.”
“It offers a lot, including the new HTC Sense 3.5 interface, 5MP camera, good call quality and battery life. But we can’t help but think that some people will be turned-off by the plum color, and would not consider the Rhyme because of it, despite it being a good phone otherwise. Because of this, it would be nice if the Rhyme were available in a few other color choices to appeal to a broader audience.”

In Depth
HTC seems to be one of the few companies that tries to understand the importance of being able to cater to the female demographic. The HTC Rhyme, with its unique purple casing and pre-packaged premium accessories, is is one such attempt. So it may have the looks, but does it have the features to match it?
Apart from the fact that it each unit comes with premium accessories included in the box, the Rhyme is very much like many other Android smartphones that came before it. It comes with a somewhat large 3.7-inch 480×800 pixel resolution touchscreen display, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS with A-GPS, and 4GB of internal storage. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread as the default operating system with a not-so-powerful combination of a 1GHz processor and 768MB of RAM, but it gets the job done. And the limited amount of internal storage space can be expanded further with the use of microSD cards.
It works with CDMA networks in the US and supports EV-DO Rev. A data, which makes it quite useful for surfing the Internet on the go. Given that it runs Android and accepts compatible third-party software, this should be quite enjoyable.
Now based on what you’ve read about this phone so far, you might think that it’s really not that different from other smartphones after all. The truth is, it does have many similarities with other models in terms of overall features, but it comes with the superior build quality that’s normally associated with the HTC brand, and looks markedly more elegant than other products in its price range. So if you’re one to appreciate good looks but don’t want to skimp on features altogether, this phone should have you covered.
