“Year 2010 wasn’t particularly good for the LG mobile department. The Korean company entered it as one of the fastest growing in business and the announcements of the GT540 Optimus and GW990 in January made things seem rosy, but it was mostly downhill from there. A series of devices that failed to achieve their sales targets and the cancellation of the GW990 almost got us worried that LG will be relegated to the role of a runner up in the mobile phone industry. And yet here comes the Optimus 2X to prove that the company still has it. The most powerful hardware we have seen, combined with a decent display and a nicely customized interface. Okay the camera could use a little tweaking, but it’s still one of the good snappers in the Android world. The device is definitely the smartphone to get right now and will most certainly remain so for at least another month or two. Of course, when the slew of dual-core droids that will imminently be announced at the MWC in a week hits the shelves, things might change, but the Optimus 2X is the benchmark against which they will all be measured. That is unless LG forgets that it has done half the required work so far. Getting a really potent smartphone to the market is all great, but you need to provide adequate tech support and regular updates or it will never manage to live up to its full potential. Especially given the fact that Android 2.2 Froyo is hardly the best polished operating system as far as dual-core CPU management is concerned. The Optimus 2X is a really high-end device, which means that it will get way with more sins than any other LG droids.”
“We can’t resist not saying it, but the T-Mobile G2x is probably the best Android powered smartphone on T-Mobile’s lineup right now – hands down! Taking into account its $200 on-contract cost, much like many other respectable high-end devices out there, it’s able to dramatically separate itself from the pack due to its standout of firsts – like its 1GHz dual-core processor and ability to shoot 1080p videos. Naturally, it doesn’t simply just meet with the levels obtained by prior devices, but rather, it shatters the mark and raises it to an entirely new level with its glorious radiance. The only thing that seems missing from the package is support for HSPA+, but as long as you don't need the most of T-Mo's 4G network, you'll be perfectly fine with it. So if you have $200 to shell out for a speedy and powerful smartphone, it’s nearly almost unthinkable for you to not pick this one up. You won’t regret it!”
“We were downright bedazzled by T-Mobile's G2x after our recent hands-on at CTIA, and we're even more impressed with LG's Tegra 2 handset now that we've lived with it for a few days. The Galaxy S 4G might have a better display, but there's no doubt that the G2x is T-Mobile's new flagship -- at least until the HTC Sensation becomes available. Not counting Google's Nexus phones, the G2x is the best Android handset that's graced our pockets. It strikes an impressive balance between powerful, quality hardware, and stock, undiluted software. It also speaks volumes of T-Mobile's commitment to plain Android. Sure, we'd have preferred a slightly nicer, higher resolution screen along with a more sensitive touch panel, throwing in Gingerbread from the start -- together with an easy mechanism to remove the bundled apps -- would've also been appreciated. Finally, a more polished camera user experience would be just lovely. Regardless of these quirks, we're left with a solid device today and room for future growth, something that can't be said about too many smartphones these days. Let's just hope LG delivers updates in a timely manner to unleash the G2x's full potential.”
“The good news for LG is that it's built a very solid foundation for itself with the Optimus 2X - Tegra 2 is an undeniably powerful, multicore architecture, one that's only going to expand in importance and value as we move forward, and the rest of the phone's specs all match up to our basic expectations of a top tier handset. Construction is robust, finely detailed and generally unobtrusive. The screen may not have anything Super about it, but as LCDs go, it's a very good one. Where we were left disappointed, however, was in the company's software execution.”
