Critic consensus
“Like it or not, 3D technology is entering our world more rapidly that the tech evolution is able to handle. Today we have 3D cinemas, home 3DTVs, glasses-free 3D screens at the malls or even street billboards imitating 3D with some extra attachments. Wearing glasses is no fun anymore so we’re glad to see that when LG has decided to make a 3D phone, they’ve made it right. And here we are, witnessing a revolution with the first ever 3D smartphone - the Optimus 3D. There’s hardly another 3D handset to match its 3D capabilities. Yes, you surely can find a match or even better smartphone, but not a 3D one.The one things that has bothered us the months between the announcement and the release - the 3D quality - has turned really nice. The 3D display looks and feels better than the EVOS 3D's and playing 3D content could be quite a fun. The 3D tech is not so advanced to work in full resolution or to work for more than one person, but it’s still an awesome feature even in this present state. As far as the smartphone part is concerned - there are probably better performers out there, but none of them has the 3D magic, right? Still, the Optimus 3D is an excellent smartphone, although a big one, and if you could give LG a little time to work on the Gingerbread update, you won't be disappointed for sure.”
“All told, the Optimus 3D is a perfectly serviceable, largely inoffensive smartphone that just so happens to possess 3D capabilities. Like the idiot savant math whiz, or the high school phenom with a poisonous crossover, LG's latest creation occasionally shows flashes of brilliance, but still lacks some fundamental qualities -- in this case, sophisticated software and a grittier battery. To LG's credit, the Optimus 3D isn't trying to be something it's not. It's certainly not reaching for the Samsung Galaxy SII's heights, nor is it looking to out-duel its Gingerbread-less brethren, like the Droid X2. Instead, the device seems to realize that it's a one-trick pony, and devotes all of its energies to harvesting that comparative advantage. For most people, that one trick probably won't be enough to justify buying an otherwise vanilla (and large) handset. 3D pioneers, on the other hand, may be more willing to shell out the £500 (about $820), as long as they're not expecting much more than extra-dimensional eye candy. At this point, it's hard for us to call LG's 3D technology anything other than a gimmick, but it's still a fun gimmick -- even if it leaves a somewhat soapy aftertaste.”
“When it comes down to value, there’s no denying that the LG Thrill 4G exudes plenty of it from head-to-toe as it combines all of the lovely features found with any high-end smartphone on the market – plus, it’s tastefully complemented by its 3D capabilities. To tell you the truth, we still can’t take our eyes away from its $99.99 on-contract pricing because it’s not too often we see handsets of this caliber launching from the start with something so tantalizing. As we’ve seen, it doesn’t hit the high mark in all categories, but it’s a bit more forgiving due to its competitive pricing. We believe it has more pros than cons for this price, so it’s a no-brainer decision to pick this one up if you’re into the whole 3D thing.”
“The LG Optimus 3D is different if only for its 3D function. Luckily, it's also a great all-around player and doesn't focus solely on 3D, which is entertaining for a while, but might come with a bonus in the form of a slight headache for some. When you use the handset in standard 2D mode, though, it's an extremely powerful device with one of the snappiest chips out there. It makes a huge difference when navigating in menus and fiddling with the browser. But this overweight powerhouse eats battery like there's no tomorrow, and if you don't plug it in for a while, its battery doesn't last to see tomorrow. 2D images were also a disappointment, just as the fact that it ships with Froyo instead of Gingerbread, but LG will hopefully fix the latter with an update soon. We wouldn't let those spoil the enthusiasm of early 3D adopters – for them the LG Optimus 3D will definitely deliver, but the rest might prefer a thinner handset with a more durable battery.”

In Depth
Using something called “parallax barrier screen technology”, the LG Optimus 3D holds the honor of being the first 3D capable phone. This glasses-free 3D experience is accomplished through the use of two 5MP cameras located on the back of the phone which record stereoscopic 3D video in HD.
To further the 3D focus of the phone, LG is partnering with the YouTube 3D channel, which provides a dedicated app on the phone, allowing users to upload/share 3D content.
The Optimus 3D boasts a huge 4.3-inch display generating 480 x 800 pixels, placing it among the top displays in both size and resolution. Add a 5MP camera with LED flash and auto-focus, HD video record (in both 720p and 1080p formats!), and a secondary camera for video calling, and it’s clear that this phone wants to show off.
You also get an MP3 player, video playback in a wide assortment of formats, FM radio, full internet browser and built-in support for Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.
Rounding out this menu of fun, high-end features is GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, HDMI, 3.5mm audio jack and expandable memory up to 32GB.
The LG Optimus 3D is a powerful phone that breaks new ground, and is sure to cause a stir among users.
