“The Motorola Edge for 2024 costs less than its predecessor and has better battery life, but its processor and camera can't quite keep up with similarly priced phones.”

“The Motorola Edge 2024 is a disappointing combination of excellent design and poor performance, coming in at a price that simply doesn't justify what you get. The slow processor affects too many things to make this a truly good experience and feels like a downgrade from 2023's excellent Motorola Edge line in nearly every way. It's a shame too because the design truly is superb.”

“The Motorola Edge (2024) offers great performance, battery life, and charging speeds. However, those pros are accompanied by a healthy dose of shortcomings.”

“I wish I could give the Moto Edge two ratings because it’s a tale of two phones. If you’re forced to pay $550, I’m giving the Edge a 7 out of 10, but if you’re lucky enough to get it on sale for around $400, it’s an 8 out of 10. Aside from its display, the Moto Edge hasn’t stood out to me again this year. Thankfully, Motorola devices make for great carrier deals, so it's decent value for $3 a month through your cell provider. Otherwise, I’d look towards one of the many impressive smartphone options available for $550.”

In Depth

Design

The 2024 version embraces a clean design with a thin aluminum frame and an eye-catching vegan leather back. It’s a pleasure to hold, with its soft texture preventing slips.

“The vegan leather back on my review unit is an absolute joy,” mentions Android Central. Despite its allure, the back gathers dirt, which reviewers warn might be inconvenient.

Its latest iteration keeps the dimensions compact and lightweight, making it feel balanced in your hand and easy to carry.

Display(s)

The 6.6-inch display provides a crisp and clear viewing experience, even under direct sunlight. Its live colors and high adaptive refresh rate ensure smooth movements as you navigate apps or browse websites.

Reviewers from Phone Arena appreciated the vibrant colors and brightness, noting that the screen “is generally excellent and not only gets plenty bright under sunlight but also offers an important flicker-reduction setting for PWM-sensitive people.”

The display’s resolution ensures images and text remain sharp, contributing to an enjoyable visual experience across different lighting conditions.

Performance

The Motorola Edge 2024’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chip handles daily tasks and apps with ease. Reviewers noted, “Generally speaking, the phone ran smoothly during testing, and I had no issues navigating the user interface, even with multiple apps open simultaneously.”

Gaming performance is acceptable but falls short compared to other devices in the same price range. Slow processing during demanding tasks can impact the usage experience over time.

Software & Storage

The Motorola Edge focuses on delivering a streamlined experience with its clean Android 14 software interface. You’ll find the UI intuitive with minimal bloatware, although Motorola does include some of its own apps.

Users can enjoy features like customizable shortcut gestures, adding convenience to everyday tasks.

Despite the smooth user interface, the brief software support is a downside. Motorola only guarantees two years of major updates, limiting the phone’s longevity compared to many competitors that offer longer support.

Cameras

The main camera uses a 50MP sensor and an ultra-wide 13MP lens, yet it falls short in photos, with colors often appearing overly bright and grainy. Reviewers note that the main camera struggles to capture fine details, making images look smudged and grainy.

The camera app offers basic shooting modes, but performance can lag, impacting photo quality and speed. Experts suggest choosing a competitor like the Pixel 8a if photography is your main priority due to its superior camera performance.

Battery

Experience long-lasting power with a 5,000mAh battery, which drastically enhances usage time compared to last year’s model. One expert mentioned “The Edge can hit an impressive 68W with a compatible charger,” ensuring minimal downtime during charge cycles.

The phone endurance ranks high, excelling in battery efficiency tests amidst its competitors, bringing peace of mind during all-day usage. Embrace a life less tethered to outlets, with the efficiency of rapid recharge times offering more freedom throughout your day.

Audio

You can enjoy loud and clear sound while streaming movies or playing games, as the speakers produce a robust output that fills small spaces. Reviewers at PCMag praised the Dolby Atmos support, noting it “brought out the bass”, creating an immersive viewing experience.

For calls, you’ll appreciate the precise microphones, ensuring your voice is distinct even with background noise. This lets you communicate effectively without strain, enhancing your overall experience.

The Bottom Line

The phone stands out with its vegan leather design and smooth grip, adding elegance and comfort to daily use. Reviewers appreciated its long battery life and rapid charging, ideal for users needing all-day power.

However, the camera and processing power fall short compared to competitors, affecting photo quality and speed. As Android Central put it, “The slow processor affects too many things to make this a truly good experience.”

Consider this phone if design and battery life are priorities, but other options offer better performance and camera quality for the same or lower price.
