“This isn't about whether or not the Nokia Lumia 1520 is the best phablet on the market. Rome wasn't built in a day and it will certainly take more than one attempt to knock the Galaxy Note 3 off its perch. But Nokia has surely done well - the Lumia 1520 a device that can potentially interest more people than most phablets usually would.Nokia may be heading for the exit but the legacy of achievement left behind wouldn't have been as great without the Lumia 1520. Yet, the 1520 will go down in history as the one that challenged the droids in a way no one thought possible. A way that makes you cringe at the thought that there might never be another phablet carrying that brand.”

“Nokia has successfully entered the phablet sector with its Lumia 1520. It convinces with its excellent build, and its very good screen. The camera also belongs to the better ones in the smartphone division, and stands out with its diverse functions and raw data support. Another highlight is the good GPS receiver that works exceptionally precise. There is not much criticism for the 6 inch phablet. One port that supports video transmission would have been welcome though. It is also too bad that the Finnish manufacturer still use USB 2.0, considering that the current 3.0 standard would allow faster recharging, and speedier data sharing. Besides that, the RRP is fairly steep even if the price has fallen considerably since its market launch.”

“Phablets demand a certain level of commitment from their users. Straddling the line between a smartphone and a tablet also means having to deal with inherent trade-offs that come with these larger-screened devices — things like reduced pocketability and the general awkwardness of using them as phones. If those compromises seem minor to you, then the Nokia Lumia 1520 should definitely be on your shortlist.”

“The Nokia Lumia 1520 is a beast of a phone with the best specifications of any Windows Phone device to date. Microsoft did a great job minimizing the needs of the OS so many of these specifications are not necessarily needed to provide a full Windows Phone experience. The display is simply too large, the right side button design is unacceptable, the removal of Qi is an embarrassment for Nokia, and no high end smartphone should ever launch with less than 32GB of internal storage.”

In Depth

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is a handheld powerhouse that has been repeatedly referred to by reviewers as the best Windows Phone released to date. TechnoBufallo’s Todd Haselton rates the hardware as excellent, and GigaOM’s Alex Colon says the software is “the best version of Windows Phone” ever made. Well worth your consideration says Eric Zeman of Phone Scoop.

The 1520 boasts a highly impressive list of specs including a full HD 6-inch IPS screen, a 20+ megapixel main camera, a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a 3,400 mAh battery. It’s “a lot of smartphone” says Dan Rowinksi of ReadWriteWeb.

Of course, there are flaws. As a phone, it’s been deemed too big and unwieldy for the average user by The Guardian’s Samuel Gibbs. Other reviewers including Matthew Miller of ZDNet seem to echo the sentiment, although they maintain that overall, it’s still very much a winner.

If you’re ready for an alternative to Apple and Android, the 1520 looks like a winner. It has an attractive price with a new two-year contract and plenty of powerful specs.

As Andrew Kameka of MobileBurn puts it, this mobile corrects all the past mistakes of Windows Phone models, and it provides an excellent way to dive into the new Windows ecosystem.

The Good: Amazing display quality, great camera, long battery life.

The Bad: Not pocket-friendly, lacks certain apps found on other platforms.
