“We love QWERTY phones over here at the Gadget Lab, but the u740 actually made our hearts go pitter-pat. Housed in an attractive metallic champagne case, the dual hinged handset sports a 2.2-inch, 262,000 color TFT display coupled with outstanding call quality. Despite a full QWERTY keypad, the 3.6-ounce phone is slim enough to disappear into a front pocket and the itty-bitty keys are surprisingly easy to type on. Pair that with a seamless EVDO connection to Verizon's music, video, web, and email services, and choosing the u740 as your smartphone is pretty much a no brainer.WIRED 1.3-megapixel cam sports flash, auto-focus, and digital zoom. QWERTY keyboard makes texting and IMing a sweet fix for SMS junkies. Touch sensitive external MP3 controls look cool and are extremely responsive.TIRED Hinge feels fragile. Video capture is choppy at best. No exterior camera button. Numeric keys are a little crammed together for the fat-fingered set. Wireless email sync costs an additional premium.”
“The Motorola MING is quite the looker but when it came to performance, the sluggish and unfriendly Linux UI let it down. The exclusion of EDGE support is unfortunate. However, Overall, I am happy with the look and feel as well as the options the Samsung SCH-u740 provides, but I definitely struggle with its many quirks. Most such issues seem to be related directly to the Verizon UI or to Verizon's V CAST services. I do certainly love the option of switching from regular predictive text input to a full QWERTY keyboard in one full swing. But I admit, the keyboard does take some getting used to and I definitely would caution novice mobile phone users that this is not the easiest keypad in the world to use due to the compromises needed to make it work in two orientations. But thanks to the keypad's flexibility, along with great battery life, a microSD expansion slot, and broadband access, I give the Samsung u740 a Recommended rating.if you are a user of the previous A780, this might be a good upgrade for you since it is a wee bit faster and it does look much better. The business card reader application is also a cool piece of software.I can only give the MING a Recommended rating and only if you can live with the sluggishness and stylus-only input. There are not many Linux based smartphones out there, so this would be your best bet if Linux is your preferred OS.”
