“The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime feels like the first laptop-class Android tablet, with its quad-core 1.4GHz processor, clever add-on keyboard dock, and its support for USB storage and console gamepads. This is easily the most impressive Android tablet ever. But with such startling specs, it's outstripping the weak app selection available for Google's Android Honeycomb OS. Although there are a few standout apps for the platform, the lack of a thriving Android tablet app community makes the Transformer Prime a less sure choice than it should be.”

“All we can say at this point is WOW! Unquestionably, this is the tablet to own right now if you’re in the market of buying one, and trust us, you won’t be disappointed at all. First and foremost, we have to give Asus credit in taking the opportunity in delivering such a high-caliber tablet that’s no doubt a benchmarker in almost every category. From head to toe, attention to detail is seen throughout every aspect of the tablet, thus, culminating in one refined product that easily gives the iPad 2 a run for its money. Ushering us into the age of quad-cores, the Asus Transformer Prime screams remarkably in the processing department – making it the fastest and best performing Android tablet we’ve had the prestigious opportunity of checking out. For some time now, Android had this stigma of never achieving the fluidity and responsiveness found with iOS, but this seemingly breaks them down and shows the endless possibilities of an Ice Cream Sandwich powered device. To balance things out, we’re also impressed that battery life isn’t compromised in the least bit, as it’s able to surprise us with its above average performance. When we think about its killer industrial design, muscle power quad-core processor, impeccable battery life, and brilliant looking Super IPS+ display, we’re all easily shocked that Asus has somehow managed to keep its cost of ownership extremely affordable. At $500, it already beats the iPad 2 in many categories – especially when it boasts 32GB of internal memory. Plus, if you’re able to shell out an additional $149.99 for its optional keyboard dock, it’s functionality is expanded even further. For the money and features that this tablet is able to present us, it’s undeniably the one to own right now, and there’s no arguing about that!”

“There’s good reason as to why many people regard these two titans as the two best tablets on the market right now. For starters, they are premium in every way, shape, and form – inside and out! Essentially, they epitomize everything that means to be cutting-edge because they share so many drool worthy elements, such as boasting killer industrial designs, lightning fast performances, and top-notch hardware specs. Simply, we have to admit that we’re both wowed and smitten by these stunning tablets. As always, pricing comes to mind, and for the base $500 price point for each respective tablet, they undeniably offer a whole lot of bang for the buck. To tell you the truth, you can’t go wrong with either, especially when they perform similarly to one another, but the biggest difference that most people will need to tackle, is simply, which platform to stick with. Frankly, these two are in a whole league of their own, and more importantly, they’ll be the benchmark to beat going forward for all other future devices. Just like two gods going at each other in the heavens, they’re immortal and cannot be defeated – so yes, they stand equally to one another. Therefore, we have to settle for the fact that neither one can actually claim victory seeing that they share the same pedestal. As a whole, you can’t go wrong with them, but as we’re mentioned numerous times already, it’s eventually going to come down to which platform is regarded in your eyes to be the favorable one.”

“The performance of the Transformer Prime is top-notch. The design is stylish, and the addition of the keyboard is a great way of turning what many see as a consumption device into a creative device. The promise of an Ice Cream Sandwich update means that the tablet should be as fresh at the end of 2012 as it is at the end of 2011. The biggest bugbear some might have is the lack of 3G connectivity. Asus tell us that there are no plans to bring a 3G version of the Prime to the UK at the moment, so you'll have to make a different provision if you need data on the move. The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is a beast of a machine that looks likely to stand the test of time. It's well-specified and well-equipped with ports and connections, offering greater flexibility than you'll find on some rivals.”

In Depth

The Asus Transformer Prime is a 10.1-inch Android-powered tablet with a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor and 1GB RAM, plus at least 32GB of internal storage. Its default operating system is Android 3.2 Honeycomb but an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is available. It offers a total standby time of nearly two weeks per charge, which translates to around 10 hours of non-stop video playback or almost 6 hours of Web surfing with Wi-Fi.

Available in two colors, Champagne Gold and Amethyst Gray, it weighs in at a little less than 600 grams. It isn’t light by any means, but it is lighter than some competing products. The touchscreen display has a native resolution of 1280×800 pixels, and there’s a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass placed on top in order to protect it from scratches and other potential damages. Underneath the sturdy screen lies a a gyroscope and a bunch of other sensors for proximity, motion, and ambient light.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity are both available as standard, although a Wi-Fi hotspot feature is not in the cards. HD video playback on supported TVs is a feature with the built-in HDMI-out port, and the 8MP main camera at the back should serve as a great source of HD content through video recording when it isn’t being used to take pictures. And before you think that this particular Asus tablet is good for nothing but entertainment, take note of the fact that it has a Document viewer which supports DOC/DOCX, PDF, XLS, PPT/PPTX, JPG, and GIF files.

It may fall through on certain aspects, but the Asus Transformer Prime may deliver a far better experience overall than most other Android tablet alternatives.
