Dell Streak

Critic consensus
“The Streak is possibly the handheld world's most awkward size, too big to fit comfortably in one hand and too small to let the eyes relax and roam the way a 7- or 10-inch tablet does. Although it could be an interesting Web-browsing and movie-watching device. If you're going to hack it and install your own software, the Streak may be a fun platform to work on. Otherwise, wait until the promised Android 2.2 upgrade before taking another look.”
“The Dell Streak is trying to find the best balance between smartphone and tablet in a place where no one else has looked. The hardware certainly seems up to the task, matching the best the market has to offer. Or so it seems when you look at the specs sheet. However, it’s the performance that counts here and the Dell Streak is not quite as smooth as we are used to seeing from Android – especially at this price point. Of course this is in no small part due to the outdated Android version. As soon as the Streak gets Froyo, things might just take a turn for the better.Right now, we can’t help but feel that it’s some way behind both its smartphone and its tablet competitors. The 7” Galaxy Tab seems to better fit the tablet bill and still packs a camera and full phone capabilities. We recently got the chance to review it and the only grudge we had was the high price tag. Unfortunately, the Dell Streak doesn’t exactly go for pennies either.Of course, it might be just us but 5” does seem stuck in the middle of nowhere: it’s either a huge phone or a tablet too small. Of course, if a 5” device can do both jobs for you, you might just go ahead and buy it. Once thing’s for sure – you can count on rock solid build quality with this one.If you’re lucky enough to get an software upgrade soon – it will be a buy you’re unlikely to regret. We’re just not sure. We’ve always thought that tablets are supposed to let you leave your laptop at home. With the Dell Streak however goes the other way – it will let you leave your phone at home and that’s all.”
“The Dell Streak offers an unprecedented combination of processor power, screen size, and design quality. Support for 3G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth hit all the wireless sweet spots, while photo, camcorder, and calling capabilities blur the boundaries between tablet and phone. The Dell Streak is the first Android tablet worth taking seriously, though its size puts it on the fence between tablets and smartphones.”
“As it seems, the Samsung Galaxy Tab reigns on top of the Android tablet market right now with its solid performance and up-to-date experience. Although the Dell Streak is still trying to find a niche for itself, its outdated Android experience doesn't particularly make it the most suitable tablet solution on the market. Despite boasting a very good camera and phenomenal battery life, it doesn't play to the needs of strictly tablet users out there. Sure the Android Market and eventual upgrade to Android 2.1 might make it a tad bit more polished, but it doesn't exhibit the Tab's already superior offerings from a tablet perspective. As for Samsung's pride and joy, its remarkable ascension to the top of the Android tablet market is quite fitting, but it still requires some fine tuning to truly make it a standout competitor outside of the Android space.”

In Depth
The Dell Streak is very unusual in the sense that it has all the features of a tablet, but is similar in size to a smartphone. It has a five inch display and a 800 x 480 screen resolution. The screen is bigger than the iPhone 4 and bigger than the Android phones, HTC Evo 4G and Motorola Droid X.
Tablets such as the iPad 2 have a 9.7 or 10 inch screen, and if you are looking to use a tablet for emails, casual gaming, or HD videos then you might want a larger screen and a virtual keyboard that is easy to type on. But the Streak’s size means neither of these two are possible.
As far as processing goes, the Dell Streak has a 1 GHz Qualcomm processor with 512 MB of RAM. It runs an old version of the Android OS, 2.2. Again, this means it is slightly behind new tablets that run on the Android 3.0. However, it is a very fast system, and can load websites very quickly as well through its WiFi. Most websites load in similar or faster times than the iPad, despite the smaller size, meaning you are not losing out on performance and speed. However, the Android 2.2 OS does not have the same quality and quantity of Android apps that the new 3.0 operating system offers, meaning users miss out in that sense.
Dell claims that their tablet is actually an improvement on larger tablets, because 95% of Android games do not take advantage of bigger screens anyway, and can be viewed or played as easily on this tablet as larger ones. However, it is difficult to judge the Dell Streak because it is not a smartphone and it is not a tablet. It is a hybrid between the two, similar in many ways to the iPod touch, and it remains to be seen whether there is a market for smaller tablets.
