Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 5

Design

The Galaxy Tab Active 5 stands out with its rugged design, making it perfect for tough environments. The thick bezels are not just for style; they provide extra space to hold onto the device securely, reducing the risk of dropping it.

Physical buttons enhance usability when you wear gloves or have dirty hands, which comes in handy on construction sites or outdoor adventures. The design includes a grippy texture, ensuring the tablet stays put even if placed on slippery surfaces.

As an expert noted, “If it does fall, like the reliable Nokia 3310, it is more likely that the tablet will break the floor than the other way around.” This robust quality makes it perfect for those who need reliable performance in challenging situations.

Display(s)

The tablet’s 8-inch display offers clarity and vibrant colors, crucial for outdoor use. With a peak brightness reaching 600 nits, the screen remains readable even in bright sunlight, ideal for work on the go.

The smooth 120Hz refresh rate enhances the user experience, particularly when scrolling through content or navigating apps, providing a fluid and lag-free interaction.

TechRadar appreciated the balance achieved, noting it’s “a bright display suitable for its rugged design.”

Performance

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab Active 5, equipped with the Exynos 1380 processor and 6GB RAM, provides smooth performance for general browsing and app usage. However, gaming and intensive apps might push this tablet to its limits, occasionally leading to lag or heat.

“Despite its heavy-duty capabilities, the Active 5 doesn’t pack enough battery punch for prolonged gaming,” according to reviewers. Nonetheless, its removable battery adds practical value, letting you swap it out on the fly for continuous use in rugged environments.

Software & Storage

Samsung’s OneUI on the Active5 gives you an interface that many find clean and uncomplicated. You’ll appreciate how easy it is to navigate without lag.

Pre-installed Samsung apps, while numerous, can be handy, offering features like PDF signing with the S Pen. Yet, some might find these apps excessive alongside Google’s offerings.

Reviewers highlight the “four generations of Android upgrades and five years of security updates,” ensuring your device stays timely and functional for years.

Cameras

The 13MP rear camera delivers excellent detail and balanced color, surpassing what many tablets achieve. This is particularly beneficial for capturing important moments in rugged settings.

The camera lacks stabilization, meaning steady hands yield the best results, especially in low light. Experts acknowledge the rear camera can “record 4K video at 30fps,” making it versatile for different shooting needs.

The front camera offers good quality for video calls and selfies, though not outstanding, it remains functional. These cameras, while not groundbreaking, meet general user expectations in terms of utility and performance.

Battery

Experience reliable battery life with the removable 5,050mAh battery, a standout feature that sets it apart for outdoor use. Although smaller than average, you can easily swap it out, providing flexibility for extended trips.

Experts note its surprising efficiency despite capacity limitations: “The battery lasted 14h 27min in our Wi-Fi test and should be able to get through a day effortlessly even with frequent use.”

Thanks to quick charging, you can rapidly recharge, minimizing downtime. Overall, you’ll find the battery life practical and adaptable for various scenarios.

Audio

When using this tablet for entertainment like movies or music, the single loudspeaker produces sound that is fairly loud but lacks the immersive stereo effect of dual speakers. As one review points out, “The audio always feels imbalanced,” a common issue with devices that don’t offer multiple speaker outputs.

In terms of calling, the Tab Active 5 is equipped with an earpiece speaker that enhances voice clarity, making it suitable for clear and reliable communication. Yet, the setup lacks advanced sound options, which could be a downside for users accustomed to superior audio quality on high-end tablets.

The Bottom Line

This tablet stands out for its rugged design, ensuring it withstands drops and water exposure, making it suitable for construction sites or tough terrains. It features a bright 8-inch display that is easy to view even in sunlight, offering a smooth, fast user experience with a 120Hz refresh rate.

“It’s a tablet that most people will almost immediately understand and work with,” says TechRadar about its user-friendly nature. Although not the cheapest in its category, it offers a unique replaceable battery option, extending its utility in extended outdoor scenarios.
