Critic consensus
“It employs the most massive iPhone screen ever. It has every new feature the company has come up with, and it's wrapped in a premium body with a bold new design that brings a dash of nostalgia. Heck, even its outrageous price tag is a selling point for many potential customers. Do we recommend getting it? Certainly, if you are after the large screen and you have an older iPhone.”
“Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro Max is expensive, no doubt. However, it remains a superb device and great tool for professionals and ambitious hobbyists.”
“There’s no doubt the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a quality iPhone – on paper, the best Apple’s ever made. On that basis, it might be the iPhone you want – but you must decide whether it’s the iPhone you need. That will hinge on your level of comfort with a device this size and your desire for the deeply impressive camera system.”
“The iPhone 12 Pro Max is truly excellent, if you can stomach its size. It offers excellent battery life, a marginally better camera than the smaller Pro, and a screen that’s a pleasure to use for watching, reading and playing.”

In Depth
While the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have a lot in common, there are some key differences you should consider when figuring out which phone is best for you.
Most of the significant changes revolve around the phone’s cameras. The Pro Max includes the same Lidar sensor found in the iPhone 12 Pro. The sensor assists in taking high-quality low-light or nighttime photos viable without an expensive standalone camera. It also allows you to shoot in Apple ProRAW for more editing flexibility.
The iPhone Pro Max takes this one step further, including Sensor-shift Optical Image Stabilization whereas the iPhone Pro. This helps to reduce shaking and blurring and further improves night photography.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max also offers up to 12x digital zoom which is 2x more than the iPhone 12 Pro. This is another area where the image stabilization will help.
The display on the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max is also the biggest screen on an Apple phone ever, coming in at 6.7-inches.
Everything else about the phone is similar — if not identical — to its smaller sibling. If the camera and screen size don’t make or break whether this phone is for you, check our iPhone 12 Pro review for more on what to expect.
