Critic consensus
“The HTC HD Mini succeeds as a smart phone despite its aging operating system. Indeed, it's actually hard to tell what lurks beneath HTC's gleaming Sense user interface. But, with Microsoft launching its new Windows Phone 7 operating system this year, it's hard to recommend the Mini, especially since its small screen means it will never get upgraded to the latest OS. If you're looking for a smart phone that's not too huge, the Legend is speedier, with a fresher OS and a better app store, all wrapped up in a gorgeous aluminium case, for about the same price. But, if you have to get a Windows Mobile phone for work purposes, for example, the Mini is an impressive option that manages to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.”
“Getting right to the point, we should say the HTC HD mini is not a great phone. Incoming loudness is fine, but voices tend to lack any natural sounding. Our callers found the volume on their side to be a bit low, with our words not being the easiest to comprehend. Then again, there aren't a lot of smartphones, which actually manage to surprise us pleasantly in this area. The manufacturer estimates that the battery of the HTC HD mini should be able to keep the phone up and running for about 7.25 hours of talk time and 340 hours (14 days) of stand-by. Not bad at all, said the cyber junkie and set the brightness to its maximum level.”
“The Mini sets out to offer us a more compact experience of the HD2, but the HD2 is all about its massive screen, and the translation of the UI to a smaller footprint also comes with concordant tradeoffs. All the same, we like what HTC's brought to the table and certainly wouldn't begrudge someone giving us one of these to use as our day-to-day handset. Would we spend the money to buy one or get hooked onto a contract for it? Probably not. The HD Mini is presently priced far too close to the Legend and we still say it's worth pushing the boat out that little bit further and getting yourself up into the 3.7-inch and above weight class. Trust us, you'll thank yourself that you did.”
“Of the four new phones that HTC announced at Mobile World Congress 2010, there was only one Windows Mobile handset. The HTC HD mini is that handset, and aims to offer most of the HTC HD2's functionality, but in a vastly smaller form factor. The HD mini offers a 5 megapixel camera, and features Windows Mobile 6.5.3 with HTC's Sense UI running on top, much like its bigger brother. Of course, the HD mini's screen is smaller and its processor less powerful, but otherwise very little else appears to have changed. Read on to find out how the overall package rounds up.”
