Hi Cheryl. Do you have a lot of apps installed that is using the internet? They're probably syncing all at the same time making the phone hot. Force stop them and observe if the phone cools down. You might also want to try to uninstall some of apps. Otherwise, I highly suggest that you have the phone checked, maybe you need a battery replacement.

Also, please try using a different charger first and observe if it still heats up. If it still heats up, go back to my earlier suggestion and have the phone checked.

If you still can't send or receive, I highly suggest that you contact your carrier to know if there's a maintenance in your area and report the problem.

Hi Randell. Open Messages app > Tap the menu icon (3 circle dots) > check if you have the option for background. If you don't, you can always install 3rd party text messaging which mostly has this feature.

Hi Randell. Try restarting your phone first then go to Settings > Accessibility > check if there's any option that ends a call when you press power button. If you find any, disable it and then try calling your phone if it changes anything.
