“There aren’t many Android tablets under $200 worth your time. There’s a certain threshold to inexpensive slates – stay above it and value balances out with price and performance, dip below and you might as well have just flushed that money down a toilet. The HP Slate 7 is *just* on the wrong side of that threshold because of its display. It’s one of the most important elements of a tablet. When the screen isn’t any good, even decent performance and good audio can’t save the device. This isn’t some cheap tablet that’s going to crap out on you three months after buying it. It’s just never going to give you a great experience.”
“I commend HP for putting themselves out there and offering a very affordable Android tablet. On the other hand, it's a disappointment to see that something so well constructed doesn't have much to show for it under the hood. On a positive note, perhaps the HP Slate 7 would prove to be an affordable learning tool for your children. However, the fact that I had to think outside the box to justify the HP Slate 7 should tell you everything you need to know about it. Don't discount it though — it's worthy a try, especially in design, and I only hope it gets better from here on out.”
“We like some aspects of the HP Slate 7, but we'd like the tablet a lot more if it cost less. On the plus side, this $169 device has a premium design, long battery life, a microSD Card expansion and Beats Audio. The Slate 7 also performs fairly well with its dual-core processor. However, the low 1024 x 600-pixel screen resolution pales in comparison to the 1280 x 800 display on the $149 Hisense Sero 7 Pro, which also boasts a speedier quad-core CPU.”
“HP made no attempts to offer a really good product. This tablet is mediocre and okay at best. They didn’t attempt to smooth the edges, the battery could have easily been bigger, or at least make the slate thin if you’ll use such a small battery. Then of course that horrid display. HP should know better. The 1024 x 600 resolution display was a killer. In a time with 1080p becoming the norm, and 720p being mid-range. We’d have to make that categorize this as a low-end Android tablet.”

I bought this tablet, not thinking too much about it based on previous experience with Coby Kyros and Craig Midi. The HP pleasantly surprised me. It does work quiet well for me,browsing via wi fi is actually quite reasonable, camera is good , and not much to complain about. I've used an I pad as we...
In Depth
It’s tough for a PC vendor to transition to the tablet business. At the low end, they need to compete against the Kindle Fire, which is supported by Amazon’s store, and the Google Nexus 7. The new HP Slate 7 is HP’s first attempt at an Android based device and they chose to go for the low end.
At $170, “affordable” is its main strength, but reviewers concluded that they shaved off too much build quality and features in their effort to hit that price.
Some reviewers recommended it for kids or very undemanding users and recommended that shoppers consider shelling out the extra $30 for the Google Nexus 7.
